What is the Internet of Things?
If we want to follow an incredibly fast-changing world of technology, we should be more than curious about the news it gives us every day. Now it is not enough to know some stuff, we have to get vast knowledge and be sure that there is no technology mile step that we miss. In this article we will bring the IoT idea closer.
IoT – What is that?
IoT is a shortcut from the Internet of Things. This term was used for the first time by Kevin Ashton in 1999 during a presentation for Procter & Gamble company. What exactly is it? Internet of Things is a concept in which every device is connected to the Internet as well as to other connected devices. It gives us kind of network which can include many devices and people.
It can be used to collect and share an enormous amount of data and the processes of how and when we are using them. Don’t be confused, but the Internet of Things is not about the Internet. It is strictly connected with data. This concept can include everything from cell phones and coffee makers to smart blinds or house lighting. It can literally be used everywhere. In 2016 the value of the IoT market was estimated at 200 billion USD and three years later it was more than 1 trillion USD.
How does it work?
Devices that have built-in sensors are connecting with the Internet of Things platforms. Those platforms collect and integrate data from many devices and – after being processed – data are transformed into the devices. The main idea of that solution manifests itself into the possibility to make recommendations or prediction. It is also a protection from damages which can happen in the future.
Example? Thanks to IoT we are able to check which area of the shop is the most visited by consumers and in which part they spend the most time. Concrete data about consumers and their way of choice can help improve the selling process to make it quicker and easier. IoT can be also used to control inside data like the amount of product on stock. Not bad.
IoT – Where is it used?
Now, when we explained what the Internet of Things means, let’s try to figure out which market fields can benefit from it. IoT can build smart homes and they become more and more popular nowadays. Using that method we can have access and control house devices, lighting or heating. But let’s go bigger – we can have smart cities.
IoT can improve water and energy distribution, automated transportation or security in the city. It can be helpful not only for people responsible for managing that things, but also for citizens. Another part of our day-to-day life that can be improved by IoT is health care. It is just a perfect solution to monitor patients’ health data and to eliminate the risk of errors or delays. Once again, the future is already here.
